About us
We are developing Europe's largest conservation project and contributing to the restoration of natural ecosystems in the Carpathian Mountains, for the benefit of nature and local communities.
Our mission and vision
In 2009, we launched one of Europe's largest private nature conservation projects in the southern Romanian Carpathians. Foundation Conservation Carpathia is a Romanian non-profit organisation created by 12 philanthropists and nature enthusiasts who wanted to protect forests from illegal logging. After forests began to be returned to their owners after 2005, abusive logging became a serious threat to the integrity of the Carpathian ecosystem.
We began by placing large areas of forest in the southern Făgăraș Mountains under protection, with the vision that they would be preserved for future generations. Ultimately, we intend for ownership of our land to return to the public domain under permanent protection, in the form of a national park, the Făgăraș Mountains National Park.
Nature conservation goes hand in hand with local economic development, educating the younger generation and engaging people.
Everything we do is supported by diverse sources of funding: public and European funding, philanthropy and private funds, individual donations, subsidies, corporate donations, and income generated by our own nature positive businesses. In this way, every project contributes to a shared goal: a future in which the nature of the Făgăraș Mountains is protected whilst local communities develop sustainably.
Our work is based on an integrated conservation model built around six essential areas, which we invite you to discover in the What we do section.
Ultimately, we intend for ownership of our land to return to the public domain under permanent protection, in the form of a National Park.
Our vision
Our vision is to create a resilient ecosystem in which biodiversity and people continue to thrive. The project includes the Făgăraș Mountains Natura 2000 site, Piatra Craiului National Park and the Leaota Mountains, covering a total area of more than 250,000 ha.
Our mission
The mission of Foundation Conservation Carpathia is to create Europe's largest forested national park in the Făgăraș Mountains – a complete and self-sufficient ecosystem that benefits both nature and people while mitigating the effects of climate change.
