The documentary Nature’s Architects premiered nationally in Bucharest yesterday, 24th October, in a packed cinema where viewers were enthralled by the story of bison and beavers returning to the Făgăraș Mountains – a habitat from which these species disappeared over 200 years ago. Supported by Foundation Conservation Carpathia, the film offers a compelling look at efforts to restore the region’s natural balance, highlighting both the challenges and triumphs of this ambitious initiative.
The documentary will be screened for the general public on 8th November at 6:30 pm at the Romanian Peasant Museum Cinema in Bucharest (3 Monetăriei Street). You can watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKb9XUbhrUs
The documentary is a series of four short films, each highlighting key aspects of the species’ reintroduction and their positive impact on the environment.
“‘Nature’s Architects’ is more than a documentary.” said Victoria Donos, Communications Director at Foundation Conservation Carpathia, “it’s an invitation to reflect on the critical role species like the beaver and bison play in regenerating ecosystems. This story aims to inspire and encourage the protection of biodiversity, while emphasizing the profound connection between nature and human communities.”
This project, funded by the European Commission’s LIFE programme, has brought Europe’s largest land mammal, the bison, back to the Făgăraș Mountains. Since 2020, over 75 bison roam freely in the region’s forests, and in 2021, the first beavers were reintroduced. Both species are pivotal to ecosystem restoration, earning their title as ‘nature’s architects’ for their exceptional adaptability and ability to restore ecological balance. The documentary beautifully captures the lives of these fascinating creatures, exploring their natural behavior and the gradual transformation of the landscape with their return.
Directed by Dan Dinu, known for Wild Romania, the documentary is a collaboration between NTD Film and Foundation Conservation Carpathia. Its overarching goal is to reintroduce native species and help nature reclaim its balance.
“While I’ve had the chance to photograph and film many species, the beaver and bison are among the most remarkable animals I’ve ever encountered,” said Dan Dinu, the director of the series. “These architects of nature have provided countless fascinating moments, allowing me to uncover their ecosystemic importance. I’m thrilled to have been part of this project and to share their story, helping others to appreciate these incredible animal.” said.
Tickets for the 8th November screening are available at standard cinema rates and can be purchased at the cinema box office or online at eventbook.ro.
