Beaver House Visitor Centre
Welcome!
Welcome!
The beaver’s ingenuity inspired us to organise all the information about its world in an interactive exhibition that is interesting for all ages. You will understand how important beavers are for the ecological balance and why their return to the southeastern part of the Făgăraș Mountains is a source of great joy.
Situated on the Bran-Rucăr route, in an area where the mountains reveal fascinating landscapes, the Visitor Centre is a stopover that helps travellers discover the special nature of the area, but also this remarkable animal, the beaver. The Beaver House Visitor Centre is also a point of attraction for those who choose to spend their holidays in the local guesthouses, contributing to the sustainable development of the community.
The centre was built with care and respect for nature by Foundation Conservation Carpathia, with the support of the European Commission through the LIFE+ programme and the Arcadia Foundation. It is the first in a network of visitor centres that are being built by Foundation Conservation Carpathia in the communities around the Făgăraș Mountains. In this way we are developing the visitor infrastructure of the future Făgăraș Mountains National Park and encouraging visitors to contribute to nature conservation.
The centre blends into the architecture of Romanian mountain villages, being a focus for eco-tourism and sustainable local development. The architecture is complex and gives the visitor, from the very first moments, an insight into the culture of the place, as well as an example of the beaver’s living space. The visit begins with a stop in a beaver’s lodge, a construction that mimics the ‘house’ the beaver builds within nature. Inside is an interactive exhibition that reveals a world slightly less known.

The Făgăraș Mountains still possess untouched landscapes, challenging mountain trails to explore and plant species long extinct in other parts of Europe. The natural forests, which cover almost 65% of the Făgăraș Mountains, are a paradise for lynx, bears, wolves, European bison, chamois, beavers, black goats, red and roe deer, wild boars, badgers and foxes. Numerous bird species can be spotted in this area.
At the foothills of the Făgăraș Mountains, the villages are laid out like a beautifully arranged string of beads. Farmers still preserve the rhythms of nature, which guide them in their labours throughout the year. Sheep-farming is one of the oldest human activities in these places, and the tradition of transhumance is still respected by the shepherds who continue to take their sheep to the highest mountain peaks.
