On Sunday, 5th May, Cobor Biodiversity Farm hosted the Flavours & Sounds of Transylvania event, organized in partnership with My Transylvania Association. 45 guests from Brasov, Sibiu, Făgăraș, Craiova and international guests accepted our invitation to spend a day at Cobor and to support a conservation enterprise. This event forms part of the Conservation Carpathia Foundation’s effort to create sustainable economic opportunities for local communities to help them carry on their work, deliver quality products and maintain the unique rural landscapes.
How do we do this? By conserving the high natural value grasslands left in Europe, promoting sustainable tourism, local cuisine, local seasonal products purchased from Cobor producers, as well as those produced on the farm, local culture, traditions and habitats from the area, leading to creating new sources of income for locals, based on nature.
Cobor Biodiversity Farm is an area where nature still has the highest protection. The richness and diversity of the species in this area is due both to traditional farming practices and to the fact that there is a natural protected area in the vicinity, Hârtibaciu –Târnava Mare Plateau Natura 2000 Site. With its forests, high hills and rich meadows with high natural value, Cobor offers an extraordinary experience.
During this event, our guests discovered step by step the beauty of Cobor Biodiveristy Farm: organic food, well-cooked, old Romanian folk music, our stunning Transylvanian Grey cattle and the horses from our horse livery and rehabilitation centre. The priest of the village told us the tumultuous history of the old fortified church. We baked ‘lichiu’, the old Transylvanian pie, that accompanies the story of the Saxon villages. Aunt Ibolya taught us how to prepare it and shared secrets known only to her.
We are encouraging the development of these conservation enterprises, which must be created to support biodiversity conservation, while generating long-term profit for local communities, financial contribution to the management of protected areas and compensation for forest owners.
